iPhone with EMEA Carrier Explained and Yes It Can be Officially Unlocked

If you’ve done an IMEI check before, some of you may notice that you have an iPhone with EMEA carrier. Odd? Here’s some brief explanation.

According to Wikipedia, EMEA is an abbreviation for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, which is a regional designation used for government, marketing and business purposes. Many European based carriers are operating in these regions.

A few years ago, French carrier Orange worked together with Apple and brought the iPhone to customers in Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Orange’s African markets.

iPhones sold there may have their carriers marked as EMEA in the Apple’s database, and may not necessarily be tied to a specific carrier.

Let’s just say that this is Apple and their partners’ strategy on working together to earn their extra millions.

If you have an iPhone with EMEA carrier, you may want to know that it can be officially and permanently unlocked.

Fix iPhone 3G/3GS FPC Logic Board Connector #3 without Heat Gun or IR Work Station

If you tried to replace your iPhone broken screen and accidentally broke connector #3 (FPC), it’s still possible to fix it without using a heat gun or a work station.

The components on modern logic boards are called Surface Mounted Devices (SMD). They do wonders with modern gadgets by making your smartphones small, lightweight, consuming less power etc. However, if one of these components are broken, it’s a challenge to replace it, especially if it involves soldering.

If you accidentally broke the delicate FPC (connector #3), you will have a problem with your earpiece and proximity sensor. You can easily get a replacement from third party vendors part replacing it will require some good soldering skills and a lot of patience.

Some of the most popular questions we get about fixing logic boards:

  • What is the best tool to use to remove SMD without breaking other components on the logic board?
  • What is the ideal temperature to remove an SMD?

Today, we will reveal to you one of the best tools you need to make all your soldering work manageable – the ChipQuik SMD1 Low Temperature Removal Kit.

With this alloy it allow you will only need a soldering iron to accomplish surface mount repair easily which normally require heat gun, IR rework station and years of soldering experience.

The concept is simple since normal lead based solder on the board have a melting temperature at 240 degree Celsius.

CHIP QUIK Desoldering Alloy have a much lower melting temperature of ~58 degree C, therefore by mixing (dilute) the two alloys together you get a melting temperature some where in between and closer to 58 degree C which allow you time to desolder complex surface mount component like FPC connector or socket connector off the board safely and effortlessly.

It helps removes 8-10 SMD’S (components).

By reducing the rework soldering temperature:

  • This special alloy will significantly reduced you solder rework soldering temperature.
  • Prevent heat related damaged to the copper pads on board.
  • Protect potentially heat damage to neighboring components or small chips.

Some Basic Instructions (with soldering iron or heat gun)

  1. Apply flux to all leads.
  2. Melt alloy uniformly on all pins (you need the temperature to be high enough to actually melt the original leads at least once in order to get the desired result as described).
  3. Maintain alloy in molten state long enough to release FPC connector.
  4. Lift connector from board with a pick or tweezers.

You can use this to change iPod, iPhone, iPad, dock connector, FPC connector, coil, resistor, wifi holder, battery connector (this is what we use in our repairs).

This alloy is recyclable and reusable for many repairs, simply heat it up with the soldering iron and you can reuse the alloy lump in your next repair job.

There you have it – the not-so-secret must-have tool when repairing iPhones!

AT&T Sold More than 7.2 Million iPhones During Quarter 4 of 2012

AT&T said that in the final quarter of 2012, they sold a record number of smartphones – 10 million, and 7.2 million units were iPhones.

This broke their record of 9.4 million units which was set in the fourth quarter of 2011.

AT&T President and CEO Ralph de la Vega said in a statement:

“During the quarter, we averaged more than 110,000 smartphone sales a day as customers flocked to our leading portfolio of the latest Android, Apple, and Windows devices. Combine that with the nation’s largest 4G network and lightning-fast LTE network that now reaches more than 170 million people and you’ll understand why customers continue to choose AT&T in record numbers”

In a few weeks time, Apple will also release their figures with estimates of 55 million iPhones were sold.

AT&T’s huge quarter undoubtedly helped Apple push above 50 percent market share for the first time ever in the U.S. market.

Judging by these numbers, do you think people are already moving away from Apple products?

Fast Factory IMEI Unlock for Verizon iPhone 5 Available for Limited Time

If you have a Verizon iPhone 5, you can officially unlock it just like our extremely popular AT&T iPhone unlock. However, this won’t be available for long.

Back in the days, unlocking an iPhone requires jailbreaking. Various tools (software) were made available for free by hackers. However, the folks at Apple have been very vigorous in closing all possible exploits to prevent unlocking. If you’re a seasoned iPhone user, you probably know what I’m talking about.

The unlocking scene has been pretty “boring” nowadays. Hackers are probably no longer motivated like they used to. iPhone baseband hackers such as @MuscleNerd and @Sherif_Hashim were not able to make any unlock for iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 (even if they did, they probably didn’t want to release it).

Then the official unlock for iPhones came along late last year and the rest is history. There are probably less people relying on a jailbreak to unlock their iPhone by now, because most people just want their iPhones to work as a phone.

Verizon iPhone 5 owners can now take advantage of this new unlocking service we are offering, but according to our suppliers, they may not be able to make this service available for long (but we’ll keep on pushing so that it can be made available permanently).

The unlocking steps for Verizon iPhone 5 is slightly different from AT&T iPhones, see the steps below:

1. Insert non-accepted SIM in iPhone e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile SIM card.

2. Restart your iPhone.

3. Open dialer, press *228 and press call button.

4. Connect to iTunes and your Verizon iPhone 5 will be unlocked.

If you have a Verizon iPhone 5, head over here to get it officially unlocked. And oh, Happy New Year 2013!
