Unlockers: Ultrasn0w 1.2.4 and Gevey Turbo SIM Blocked in iOS 5.0.1?

iPhone unlockers who plan to update to iOS 5.0.1 should read this first.

The iOS 5.0.1 that was just released two days ago seems to block Gevey Turbo SIM from functioning altogether despite having baseband 4.10.01, 3.10.01 or 2.10.04.

Ultrasn0w 1.2.4 is not working as well, so even if you have an unlockable baseband, you will be stuck on No Service, Searching or Invalid SIM.

If you plan to update to iOS 5.0.1, I would suggest that you wait. If you don’t need an unlock, you may still want to read this first.

Download Sn0wbreeze 2.8b11 Custom Hacktivated iOS 5.0.1 IPSW for iPhone 4 (GSM) and 3GS

Unlockers and jailbreakers, get your custom iOS 5.0.1 firmware here. Custom firmware ensures that your baseband is always preserved for unlocking.

UPDATE: Untethered, jailbroken, hacktivated iOS 5.0.1 can be downloaded here. If you have an AT&T iPhone, unlock it right here.

Wait – before you update to iOS 5.0.1, read this warning from MuscleNerd.

These custom firmware were made using sn0wbreeze v2.8b11 [download sn0wbreeze-v2.8b11.zip for Windows only] and they will ALWAYS preserve your baseband.

Preserving your baseband allows your iPhone to be unlocked with supported software such as ultrasn0w or hardware e.g. Gevey Turbo SIM for iPhone 4.

Even if you don’t intend to unlock it now, preserving your baseband will increase your iPhone’s resale value. Your potential buyer may want to unlock it.

Since the jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 is still tethered, you will need to use iBooty or redsn0w to boot your device to a jailbroken state. If you’re new to restoring your iPhone with custom firmware, please be aware that you will need to pawn DFU your iPhone first to allow it to accept custom firmware. Use redsn0w or iREB for this.

Be sure to install the iTunes 10.5 in order to install custom iOS 5.0.1.

Note for iPhone 4 and 3GS unlockers:

  • iPhone 4 – Gevey Turbo SIM works with iOS 5.0.1 as long as you don’t have baseband 4.11.08. Please share this information with your friends! Many people updated to iOS 5 and lost their unlock!
  • iPhone 3GS – ultrasn0w 1.2.4 is not yet ready for iOS 5.0.1. The latest baseband that comes with iOS 5.0.1 is also 5.16.05 (no change from iOS 5.0), and there’s no way to unlock it. Note that the latest ultrasn0w only supports older basebands.

MuscleNerd: Jailbreakers and Unlockers Avoid iOS 5.0.1 or Else No Way to Downgrade to iOS 5.0

Despite there are tools already available to jailbreak (tethered) iOS 5.0.1, MuscleNerd still warned jailbreakers and unlockers to stay away from iOS 5.0.1 otherwise there’s no way to downgrade to iOS 5.0.

MuscleNerd twitted earlier today:

“Jailbreakers and unlockers should avoid today’s 5.0.1 until a flow for downgrading to 5.0 is developed.”

Apple is doing all they can to avoid iPhone users to downgrade their device to early versions of iOS. Even if you have saved your SHSH before, potentially you won’t be able to restore to any earlier iOS version at all. MuscleNerd wrote about this on their blog a few weeks ago when iOS 5 was still in beta stage. In one of the paragraphs MuscleNerd specifically mentioned:

“Starting with the iOS5 beta, the role of the “APTicket” is changing — it’s being used much like the “BBTicket” has always been used.  The LLB and iBoot stages of the boot sequence are being refined to depend on the authenticity of the APTicket, which is uniquely generated at each and every restore (in other words, it doesn’t depend merely on your ECID and firmware version…it changes every time you restore, based partly on a random number).  This APTicket authentication will happen at every boot, not just at restore time.  Because only Apple has the crypto keys to properly sign the per-restore APTicket, replayed APTickets are useless.”

You can read the details here.

It’s always nice to update to the latest iOS 5.0.1, but if you really rely on an unlock or jailbreak, it’s better to wait and be patient until proper tools are released.

Direct Download Links iOS 5.0.1 for iPad 1 and 2, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPod Touch

After about a month since the release of iOS 5.0, the latest update of iOS 5.0.1 was finally released today to resolve battery woes, iPad 2 smart screen security issue, bug fixes etc.

iPhone 4 and 3GS users who rely on an unlock should NOT update to the latest iOS 5.0.1 using stock firmware. You must always use custom firmware, which I will post shortly.

And here’s the link to download iTunes 10.5.

iPhone 4S’ Advanced Proximity Sensor is Built for Siri’s ‘Raise to Speak’ Feature

A new advanced proximity sensor built into the iPhone 4S is not simply a proximity sensor, it’s Siri’s “eyes” to detect whenever you’re close to your iPhone 4S.

If you own an iPhone 4S you will be pleased to know that it has a cutting edge hardware. You might have already noticed a “raise to speak” feature on your iOS 5.

This allows Siri to be activated whenever an active iPhone is raised to the user’s ear or face. It is able to sense the raising action using a proximity sensor capable of detecting how close the user’s face is to the screen.

In a video featured on iFixit.com, it shows how the proximity sensor emits infrared light at all times to support Siri’s ‘Raise to Speak’ feature.

They also demonstrated how the iPhone 4′s proximity sensor is only activated while on a phone call, while the sensor on the iPhone 4S is active whenever the device’s display is on. You can watch the video below.

Well, that’s another reason why the iPhone 4S is light years ahead compared to other smartphones out there. Do you own an iPhone 4S already?
