AT&T to Begin Blocking/Blacklisting Stolen or Missing iPhone’s IMEI from July 10

The iPhone – one of the most sought after smartphones in the market, you won’t be surprised how many go missing or reported stolen everyday – and AT&T is doing something about this, other carriers may soon follow suit.

UPDATE: 6 Things You Can Do with an iPhone that Has Bad ESN or Blacklisted IMEI

Based on the  report by The Verge yesterday, AT&T will start blocking missing or stolen phones from their network beginning July 10. This is done by blacklisting the phone’s IMEI. Technically this is not something new, as it is already being practiced in many European countries, Japan, Australia and some South American countries.

When a phone’s IMEI is blacklisted, it won’t connect to the network. Some European carriers still allow data, but the phone won’t be able to send/receive calls or text messages. It’s good as an iPod touch, so to speak.

The bad news is that if you’ve bought a used iPhone and you don’t know anything about its history, chances are that you won’t be able to use it on AT&T’s network anymore if the iPhone was reported stolen before. It’s highly recommended that you check the IMEI first before buying any used iPhone.

While currently there’s still no announcement by other US carriers to initiate the same restriction, potentially carriers such as Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint may co-operate with the FCC to build a common missing/stolen phone database. By then, once an iPhone is reported stolen, it’s good as an iPod touch because you won’t be able to use the iPhone on any network.

We’ve received countless emails from customers asking if there’s a way to unblock their phones because they bought them online (some were quite cheap) and found out they were not able to use them because they were blacklisted by their mobile service providers.

According to the report on The Verge, only the original owner registered to the phone can request to unblock the phone. Other possible solutions would be swapping the logic board either with us or from another iPhone user from another country or replace the chips which are programmed with different IMEI.

Remember about a few months ago when all of us contacted AT&T to request for a free unlock? You submitted your iPhone’s IMEI to them and many requests were rejected. That’s probably because of your iPhone’s “history”. By now, AT&T should already have records of what happened to stolen or missing iPhones – and who the new owners are. Scary isn’t it?

Do you think your iPhone was reported missing or stolen before? We now offer an IMEI barred/blocked/blacklisted check. If you have an AT&T iPhone, you can now officially unlock it no matter what the status is (reported missing, has past due balances etc.)

iOS 6 Beta Baseband Updated for iPhone 4 [4.12.02], 4S [2.8.01] & 3GS [5.16.06]

When iOS 6 was made available to developers recently and those who managed to install it would notice the baseband or modem firmware for all iPhone models has been updated.

UPDATE: If you have an AT&T iPhone (all models, any iOS, any baseband), you can permanently unlock it using this.

Here’s the updated baseband version for all iOS 6 supported iPhones:

  • iPhone 4  – 4.12.02
  • iPhone 4S – 2.8.01
  • iPhone 3GS – 5.16.06
  • iPhone 5 – 1.00.16

The biggest revision is the baseband for iPhone 4S which has been updated from the current version 2.0.12. This probably means the exploits used for Gevey Ultra S will be blocked permanently. We still have no idea what’s the hardware going to be for iPhone 5 hardware information is here, so at the moment there’s no information on the baseband version.

If you don’t have an official unlock, you should stay away from any beta software update because there’s no method available to preserve your baseband or to unlock new baseband.

For iPhone 4 users (maybe iPhone 4S too), if you have either baseband 4.11.08 or 4.12.01 which can’t be unlocked, you CAN actually test drive iOS 6 beta. Since Apple is still signing iOS 5.1.1, you can always downgrade the iOS and the baseband gets downgraded too.

SAM unlock method may work as long as SAM pref is fully supported on iOS 6; provided that Apple didn’t setup a way of blocking this method. Since iOS 6 beta jailbreak is only available for developers, that means unlockers need to wait as well.

iPhone 3G/3GS iPad Baseband 6.15.00 Downgrader to 5.13.04 is Coming Soon?

If you’re stuck on iPad baseband, I know it’s been a long wait but MuscleNerd had successfully downgraded the first iPhone 3GS with iPad baseband 6.15.00 to 5.13.04.

This downgrader tool will help those who managed to get their iPhone 3GS officially unlocked from AT&T and of course would help resolve the dreaded GPS issue with iPad baseband 6.15.00.

If you see MuscleNerd’s tweet above, the method seems to work without any issue. While there’s still no unlock available for baseband 5.14.02, 5.15.04, 5.16.02 and 5.16.05, this tool will help unlock your iPhone 3G or 3GS without resorting to iPad baseband.

Here’s how I envision this tool to work (most likely will be made available via redsn0w):

  1. Using redsn0w, go to Extras > Jailbreak > Install iPad baseband.
  2. Once the flash is successful, go to Extras > More > Downgrade Baseband to 5.13.04.
  3. Redsn0w will do its magic and downgrades the baseband from 6.15.00 to 5.13.04.
  4. With baseband 5.13.04, you can then unlock it with ultrasn0w and have your GPS working once more!

That would be amazing! Unfortunately, those with newer NOR chip might not be able to enjoy this as flashing the iPad baseband will brick your logic board. Essentially, this is really just for iPhone 3GS (and 3G) made before week 28 of 2011.

Another risk from this method is the process of flashing iPad baseband, there’s a small percentage of failure which will wipe out your baseband chip’s IMEI, WiFi and Bluetooth information.

If the tool is to be made available soon, it will definitely take some loads off from our baseband chip replacement service but that will help us concentrate on fixing iPhone 4/4S and finding potential unlocks for baseband 4.11.08 and 4.12.01.

Highlights of MuscleNerd’s ‘Evolution of The iPhone Baseband And Unlocks’ Presentation at HITBSecConf2012 Amsterdam

Hackers gathered at the annual HITBSecConf2012 held at Amsterdam, The Netherlands this week. Famous iPhone baseband hacker MuscleNerd was there to present a topic on iPhone baseband unlock.

This conference has become the ‘must attend’ event in the calendars of security professionals from around the world. Having started as a small gathering of Malaysian security specialists in 2002, the event has since expanded out of its home base in Kuala Lumpur to Dubai and in 2010, The Netherlands.

Inspiring hackers should definitely read his presentation on ‘Evolution of The iPhone Baseband And Unlocks.’ It details the history of iPhone’s baseband and how hackers manage to find exploits and developed various types of unlocks for iPhones.

MuscleNerd admits that initially he was interested in hacking baseband but now focusing more of his time maintaining and extending redsn0w. Probably that’s because Apple had patched all potential exploits on newer iPhones which left him no choice but concentrating more on jailbreaking.

The presentation is rather technical and it would require some background knowledge on hardware and embedded software programming to fully appreciate the contents of his presentation.

Some of the interesting highlights are:

  • General overview of iPhone baseband – how it works, exploits and and how Apple patched them
  • How Dev Team monitored each baseband update – making exploits less possible each time
  • Technical details of baseband codes
  • Details of iPhone 2G software unlock – the earliest version of iPhone software unlock
  • Details of iPhone 3G/3GS software unlock (ultrasn0w)
  • Details of iPhone 4 unlock – ultrasn0w for baseband 1.59.00, how Apple added Data Execution Prevention (DEP) called “crossbar” which was eventually bypassed by MuscleNerd and hacker @planetbeing
  • SIM interposer unlock e.g. Gevey SIM
  • Activation ticket unlock method such as SAM unlock by loktar_sun
  • 3G/3GS baseband downgrades, iPhone 4 baseband downgrade, BBTickets
  • Details of iPhone 4S baseband architecture
  • Baseband 6.15.00 unlock for 3G/3GS, why newer chip can’t take baseband 6.15.00 and will brick it

Go ahead and view his presentation here. It will give you ideas and probably some truths why software unlock might be a thing of a past.

Apple Released iOS 5.1.1 with No Baseband Change; iPhone 4S’ Updated to 2.0.12

What a surprise from Apple (as always) on a Monday! They’ve just released iOS 5.1.1 firmware for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

UPDATE: Unlock your AT&T iPhone permanently. Read more here.

Here are the change logs – iOS 5.1.1 improvements and bug fixes:

  • Improves the reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut.
  • Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks.
  • Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances.
  • Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List.
  • Fixes an issue where ‘Unable to purchase’ alert could be displayed even after a successful purchase.
  • Patches important URL spoofing vulnerability in Safari
  • Baseband version for iPhone 4S (2.0.12), iPhone 4 (4.12.01), iPhone 3GS (5.16.05)

You should never install any new update if you rely on an unlock or untethered jailbreak, well not until proper tools or methods are available to unlock or jailbreak your iPhone.

MuscleNerd specifically warned A5 and A5x devices owners about updating to iOS 5.1.1, although hacker ion1c has already tweeted that the new iPad (3) has been successfully jailbroken.

Remember to save your SHSH as always!

Let’s hope the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 and iOS 5.1.1 will be released soon!
