R-SIM iPhone 4S Unlock Not Working? Full Instructions How-to-Use & Troubleshooting Guide

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic!

UPDATE: Due to serious quality issues with this product, we decided to distribute Gevey Ultra S instead, see it in action here!

This guide will show you how to use R-SIM to unlock your iPhone 4S. If you’ve got everything setup, simply follow the instructions below. Do you need one? Order now from our online store.

First things first – If you’re new to using locked iPhone, when iOS 5.1 is due for release in March, DO NOT UPDATE your iPhone without consulting anyone! You will update the modem firmware (baseband) to 1.5.04 (the version on iOS 5.1 beta 3) and you won’t be able to unlock it! If you see iTunes prompting you that there’s an update, cancel it!

I must admit that the R-SIM interposer unlock for iPhone 4S is far from perfect unlike the ultrasn0w unlock, but it gives iPhone 4S owners the ability to use their iPhone as a phone again. Well, at least until this product becomes more mature or better solutions have been developed.

Ready? See the steps below.

A. Manual Mode – Initiate 112 Mode Manually – Recommended

Before you begin, setup your iPhone 4S with the R-SIM. Turn off your iPhone 4S.

1. Switch on your iPhone 4S.

2. Go to Settings, wait until the phone app turned from light green to solid green.

3. Go to Phone > SIM Applications.

4. Tap on “Country & Operators” then select your appropriate service provider which your iPhone 4S is locked to (default is AT&T). For instance, if yours is locked to AT&T, then choose MODE 1 AT&T.

5. Go back to SIM Application menu by tapping the left arrow on top.

6. Tap on “ENTER 112 Mode.”

7. Wait for the Accept Screen to come up then tap “Accept”. Go to the main menu, wait for 5 seconds then dial 112. Once connected, do not hang up.

8. Slowly eject your SIM card, then push the SIM card back into the iPhone again. Wait for the iPhone to hang up itself or hang up after you see the “no service” on the top left screen.

9. Your iPhone will start searching for the network. If you see “No Service”, continue waiting until your service provider name appears. Done!

Note: If you turn off your iPhone, You would need to do these steps again. Don’t be discouraged, it takes practice and you will soon master it after a few times! How often do you turn off your iPhone anyway?

B. Automatic Mode – Takes you to the ‘Accept Screen’ Automatically

Note: Best to avoid this mode because I wasn’t able to find how to cancel it.

Before you begin, setup your iPhone 4S with the R-SIM. Turn off your iPhone 4S.

1. Switch on your iPhone 4S.

2. Wait till the phone app turned from light green to solid green.

3. Go to Settings > Phone > SIM Applications.

4. Tap on “Country & Operators” then select your appropriate service provider which your iPhone 4S is locked to (default is AT&T). For instance, if yours is locked to AT&T, then choose MODE 1 AT&T.

5. Go back to the previous screen and select Auto Mode. Turn off your iPhone.

6. Turn on your iPhone. Wait for the Accept Screen to appear then tap “Accept”. Wait for 5 seconds then dial 112. Once connected, do not hang up.

7. Slowly eject your SIM card, then push the SIM card back into the iPhone again. Wait for the iPhone to hang up itself or hang up after you see “no service” on the top left screen.

8. Your iPhone will start searching for the network. If you see “No Service”, continue waiting until your service provider name appears. Done!

Additional Notes

1 . If your iPhone doesn’t show the service provider, you can dial a workable phone number, once connected, wait until the phone hangs up itself.

2. If you cannot find your mobile service provider under “Country & Operators”, you can enter the Country (MCC) and Service Provider (MNC) manually under “Edit Mode”. We will publish a complete list here soon or you can email us for information (customers only).

3. AT&T iPhone 4S will require jailbreaking because the APN settings will not show once unlocked. Once jailbroken with GreenPois0n Absinthe, install “TetherMe” via Cydia. You will have the APN settings back.

4. Keep coming back as I’ll continue to update this tutorial and will post a video very soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does this work on Verizon or Sprint iPhone 4S?

Currently it’s not supported.

2. How do I fix the issue of not being able to send or receive SMS when I travel internationally (for China-based users)?

When you move to another country the iPhone still memorizes the previous country code. As a result, you cannot receive or send messages because of the incorrect country code (prefix).

Solution: On your iPhone, go to Settings > Phone > International Assist and turn this off.

Then you can change the language from Chinese to English. Turn off the iPhone then turn it on again. Change the language from English to Chinese. Then make sure International Assist is set to off. Then turn off and turn it on once more.

3. How to fix the “Activation Required” when trying to do the unlocking steps?

Solution 1: After turning on your iPhone and before inserting R-SIM, insert your local GSM SIM card into your iPhone 4S. Wait for a few minutes minutes, then go to Settings > General > About. Once you see your service provider eject the GSM SIM card and begin the unlocking steps (no need to turn off).

Solution 2: Your SIM card might be too old and it’s not supported by this device. Get a replacement or a new SIM card from your mobile service provider.

4. Is there a video of the unlocking steps?

Sure – take a look at this Vietnamese customer’s video

Comments & Discussion

  1. Hi. Does this work with the Verizon iPhone 4s since that phone is exactly the same as the At&t phone hardware-wise. If not, had it been tested on a verizon iPhone 4s?

    Thanks in Advancr

  2. Hi!
I want to know if R-Sim work with any carrier gsm in the world or only with them that you have listed. For example i live in italy and i want to use this sim unlock with VODAFONE ITALY. Will it work?
    Thank You

    • That's what I thought. I would buy 100+ of these if they worked on the Verizon iPhone 4S. Someone has to get this working, they're exactly the same, the only thing that is different is software. Same basebands.

  3. I finished the steps but it says no service still? I’m using a 4s on AT&T and trying to get it to work for Tmobile? I even downloaded Tetherme. What’s wrong?

  4. Do you mind walking me through the process? I’m sorry I’m not very good at this :/ but I click on edit code? Or is Edit mode accessed another way? And then what would I enter for tmobile??

  5. Mine simply doesn't work, after i get in the sim menu, hwere is dial 112 and edit it gets stuck there, none of the options do something :(

  6. a friend told me that these are old refurbished gevey or rebel sim cards for the iphone 4. it was reprogrammed to work for the 4s. i saw some pics of the product, they just colored the sim interposer all black -_-''

  7. I have an unactivated locked Sprint iphone 4S with baseband 1.0.13. I want to use the phone on a GSM network outside of USA. Can I use my GSM Sim card with R-SIM interposer and unlock my phone? (The Sprint CDMA phone has a sim card slot because the iphone 4S is a world phone)

  8. ok.. so you are obviously not gonna post my previous comment? so scary right? noone gonna buy your sim cards :D

  10. will it work with ATT locked 4S Phones to unclock and use with Mexican carriers? or will it work with Mexican locked 4S Phones to unclock and use with Mexican carriers? Im interested in.

  11. applenberry r claiming that their GEVEY Ultra S for GSM iPhone 4S does not require any 112 dialing, does it mean their solution is mre perfect?

  12. "eachsupplier" as already withdrawn their sales for the r-sim due to not working properly. They do work for about 5-10 minutes and then totally stop – unless you go through the installation process by redialing 112 over and over and over again.

  13. I cannot get it to even recognize my sim card. I'm with T-Mobile and I can't get to even the first step. What do I do? I tried contacting about a refund, but to no avail.

    • this is the reason why you need to purchase any unlocking device from us, not from other vendors… :)

anyway, try with a different SIM card, if it's too old it won't work

  14. this card does work as I can attest to it. but there is issues though.

Every 2 hours or so it will give you a INVALID Sim error. which makes you reboot several times to get it to work again.

its rather annoying especially if this your lifeline to the world. I don't know of a fix for this but this is what it is right now

    I have r-sim 3.23
