In case you missed the news last weekend, an “unknown” hacker hamzah_akram had finally released his unlock method. We decide to re-write the steps as the one written by hamzah was thought to be confusing, unclear or simply too technical for many people.
Please note that I have not yet tested the steps below due to time constrains as we’re extremely occupied with logic board repairs. The steps were re-written based on my technical understanding of how the “unlock” works. Special thanks too djClint, “Taylor” and hamzah_akram himself for proof-reading the steps.
Requirements
- Jailbroken iPhone 4 with baseband 4.11.08 (US AT&T model is used for this test).
- Working official carrier SIM card (AT&T SIM card)
- SIM card with constant data availability. Data must be active all the time (China Mobile SIM card is used for this test, so if you’re in the US and would like to use T-Mobile, use a T-Mobile SIM card)
- SAM Preference installed via Cydia. Click here on how to install SAM Preference.
Before You Begin…
- Turn on WiFi.
- Go to Settings > General > Network and turn on both Data Roaming and Cellular Data.
- Go to Settings > Turn off Location Services.
- Go to Settings> General > International > Region Format > The country should match the country of which the iPhone is locked to.
Steps
Attention: Don’t get confused – the instructions below are written for China Mobile network. Anything that has reference to China Mobile, change it to your own service provider.
1. Launch SAM Preference. Tap on home button (this will make it run in the background).
2. Go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz and download your unofficial carrier profile (China Mobile). Use the example below if you’re in China using China Mobile. Use your own country mobile service provider APN settings.
2. Insert AT&T SIM card and dial any number. If you see No Service, dial 112 and hang up after 5 seconds.
3. Go to Settings > Carrier and turn off auto search and then select China Mobile. You will get a message that says “Restricted network … ”. Hit Dismiss.
4. Go to Settings > Turn on airplane mode.
5. Quickly go to SAM > Utilities and Hit De-activate iPhone and (clear push) then hit Revert lockdown.
6. Go back to main SAM settings and disable Subscriber Artificial Module.
7. Forget Wireless Network and turn off Ask to Join Networks.
8. Go to Cydia > Manage > Sources then “bingner” then uninstall SAM. Don’t “restart springboard” just yet.
9. After SAM is uninstalled, tap on home button, go to Settings then forget the Wi-Fi network that’s currently connected. Turn off ‘Ask to Join Network.’
10. Make sure Airplane mode is turned on.
11. Eject the AT&T SIM card and hit OK when you see ‘No SIM Card Installed.’
12. Go back to Cydia and prepare to insert China Mobile SIM card.
13. Tap “Restart Springboard” and quickly insert China Mobile SIM card.
14. You will see the regular Activation Screen with (E) on the top left corner. Wait for 30 seconds.
15. Turn off your iPhone and then turn it on again. You will see the same activation screen with one signal bar and (E) data connection.
16. Tap on “use cellular connection” and wait 5 to 8 seconds.
17. Eject your SIM card and then quickly reinsert it. You will be redirected to the Home screen! You should now see a full signal bar with China Mobile network.
18. Quickly call China Mobile’s customer service hotline number (10086) for 1 minute. (“auto reply services center” of China Mobile)
19. Finally, go to Settings > General > About and check your carrier: it must be “Carrier 11.0” instead of “Carrier Lab 11.0″ or something else.

I cannot make it work – tried many times, I don't see an 'E' in activation screen and SIM not valid when adding WiFi, and there are still many areas badly descriped steps. Eg. should a SIM be present from beginning when SAM is installed, what options should be set in SAM in the first step? http://www.unlockit.co.nz is working like an installed app on the iphone, should we create a profile and install this using this program? Both step 7 and step 9 are asking for the same action? when is it correct to do this, airplane mode keeps on setting to off.
When I get to this step 7 "turn off auto search and then select China Mobile" I get an error "Unable to load network list"

You should be more clear of this:
Official Carrier SIM Card = To Where your iPhone are locked in. (AT&T, Softbank,T-Mobile,etc)

This is definitely not working!! Tried too many times it doesn’t work in US for sure the only people it works for is maybe outside us. Everyone whose said it works is outside US.
On a side note, hey iphonerepair, you know the sim re-write method? Is that legal in US? Also, does it work in US? I really want to see some feedback on that before I buy.
only if the SIM card can be decrypted, but 4.11.08 blocks the SIM re-write exploit too, so it's pointless for now

Ahh good to know. Oh well I’m using Gevey but it drains battery for 4.10.01 didn’t want to spend so much just for a single device was hoping it would work for the iOS5 unlock also. Any new news from Gevey team for ios5?
Dear Richard, what I suggest (my own opinion) to stop considering Hamza`s solution as an unlock n making this number of posts about it, that even if it worked 4 some people, coz it`s not a robust n real unlock, its just a way that Apple let open for activating the iphone in case we use the it with its original carrier, it`s not worth all this noise, anyway all ip4 stucked guys should thank u 4 ur hard work, quick updates, n ur tight sympathy with`em, I wanted only to get the things more efficient, Merci Bien
Thanks! Yes, my opinion is that this will never be an ideal unlock, because:
1. It takes too many steps for an average user
2. Too many variables involved which will cause errors, issues while trying to perform the "unlock"
3. GSM network infrastructure or setup may slightly differ from one country to another, thus may be the reason why most people are not able to do this
4. Even if it works, it's not guaranteed that it would work every time
5. This might be a flaw with iOS or something, and potentially it can be used for a different unlock method e.g. Turbo SIM

Hey fckrs! you can use the gevey with o without AT&T card, i have a ultra sim, att card and TELCEL card (Mexico),
I will use the ultrasim and at&t card together for 3rd step for select carrier (Telcel)
but my problem is when the activation screen cant see the (e) and can't activate the iPhone with "cellular connection" only can iTunes and wifi….

On the part where I have to call 112, i hung up after waiting 5 seconds.When i went to settings to turn off automatic network selection, it says "Unable to load network list" and goes back to automatic network selection. Guy, i’ve been trying with 3 kinds of sim, Metfone-Mobitel-Smart, that available in my country. Each sim was tried 2 times. Final result is fault. Has anyone heard of http://www.cutyoursim.com? apparently they'll unlock the AT&T locked iPhone 4. In fact they say it'll factory unlock it permanently and that you can upgrade iOS's from that point forth. It's a little pricey though at $184.00. Opinions? Thoughts?

IMPORTANT! This tutorial is useless! For the moment (4th of May 2012) there is NO OTHER solution to unlock iPhone with baseband 04.11.08 THAN using a Gewey SIM Turbo or purchasing the unlock code from the operator's code generator! This is 100% sure!
It is sad that persons like Hamzah Akram (or whoever is he) like to fool people,and even worse that so many believe him. Just think logic people, what supposed to do with unlock the turning on/off airpalne mode,and the speed of doing these steps ("Eject your SIM card and then quickly reinsert it" >>so what if i insert it slowly,it will not work??
