Wait – before you update to iOS 5.0.1, read this warning from MuscleNerd.
These custom firmware were made using sn0wbreeze v2.8b11 [download sn0wbreeze-v2.8b11.zip for Windows only] and they will ALWAYS preserve your baseband.
Preserving your baseband allows your iPhone to be unlocked with supported software such as ultrasn0w or hardware e.g. Gevey Turbo SIM for iPhone 4.
Even if you don’t intend to unlock it now, preserving your baseband will increase your iPhone’s resale value. Your potential buyer may want to unlock it.
Since the jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 is still tethered, you will need to use iBooty or redsn0w to boot your device to a jailbroken state. If you’re new to restoring your iPhone with custom firmware, please be aware that you will need to pawn DFU your iPhone first to allow it to accept custom firmware. Use redsn0w or iREB for this.
Be sure to install the iTunes 10.5 in order to install custom iOS 5.0.1.

Note for iPhone 4 and 3GS unlockers:
- iPhone 4 – Gevey Turbo SIM works with iOS 5.0.1 as long as you don’t have baseband 4.11.08. Please share this information with your friends! Many people updated to iOS 5 and lost their unlock!
- iPhone 3GS – ultrasn0w 1.2.4 is not yet ready for iOS 5.0.1. The latest baseband that comes with iOS 5.0.1 is also 5.16.05 (no change from iOS 5.0), and there’s no way to unlock it. Note that the latest ultrasn0w only supports older basebands.

I upgarded to ios 5 without preserving baseband and stuck with 4.11.08, GEVEY sim not working, no way to unlock it. Now my question is, if i do above, will get my iphone 4 working?

Everything went fine until it tries to reboot after restore.. it just sits with an empty progress bar forever.

just use redsn0w, Extras > Just Boot, it will reboot it and completes the install

how did you pass the restore problem?
you need 2 things: redsnow and firmware 5.0
1. download Redsnow
2. open redsnow then click on "Select IPSW" then select the firmware 5.0 (not 5.0.1)
3. then just go back and click on "Just Boot"
4. follow the instructions and thats all

I guess the follow up question would be, if I update my iphone with this custom firmware, with the non-jailbreak version, would the phone still require tethering, or is that only the case if you actually jailbreak the phone?

Then, what's the point to download this customized IPSW if baseband can't be downgraded or change back to lower version? I upgraded to 5.01 and jailbroke it with jbtool already but can't unlock it since it has 4.11.08 baseband. I didn't preserve the baseband before upgrading to ios 5.01

I finally figured it out BUT the iPhone 3GS (NBR) won't find the carrier network. When I try to choose carrier manually, it fails and auto-switches to automatic carrier detection.
Any idea what I could do?

my phone is locked to the US carrier and i don't have the sim (don't even know which it is.. i bought it from second hand market)
so will i be able to activate my iphone by installing custom firmware by sn0wbreeze? I know i got to wait for unlock, but at least i wish i can activate the phone now to make some good use of it!

I just downloaded the newest custom firmware 5.0.1 by sn0wbreeze. However it says firmware not the same or sth like that..

problem solved. i did it through restore the offical firmware once, then build my own custom firmware and installed it with no problems. finally my device is activated, however i got to wait for the next unlock solution…

Should I download this custom 5.0.1 ipsw if I have a Mac and I can’t run sn0wbreaz? I’m trying to update my wife’s phone to 5.0.1 but want to keep the baseband because we use Gevey. Step: (don't put your simcard at this stage!!)
1) Enter DFU mode. Then applied IPSW through iTunes( mine iTunes 10.5)
2) Then i use iBooty v2.3 to boot up. After done (mine still got black screen), i open tinyumbrella..
3) I used tinyumbrella latest version to kick device using fix recovery/exit recovery (until iphone bring the activation screen)
4) I use Redsnow_win_0.9.10b3 to Jailbreak… i tick install cydia and iPad baseband..
5) after finish, I install ultrasnow 1.2.5 through cydia..
6)Then turn on flight mode, disable location service.. Turn on iPhone..
7) Put ur simcard, on ur iPhone then turn off flight mode.. wait a little while before the carrier finally appeared (bout 5 minutes)
