iOS 4.2 is Released Friday, November 12th! New Ultrasn0w in 48 Hours?

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic!

The day has finally arrived – Friday, November 12th at 10am Pacific Standard Time! You may see iTunes innocently offer you a new version of iOS…version 4.2. Warning: If you rely on a jailbreak/unlock… DO NOT ACCEPT IT! Please share this page with your family and friends.

It was supposed to be released on Tuesday November 9th but due to a bug that does not allow Japanese characters to display properly – which was discovered at the very last minute, forced Apple to fix the issue and postponed the launch to today.

The new version of ultrasn0w that everyone has been waiting for to unlock baseband 5.14.02 should come out tomorrow or day after tomorrow, fingers crossed!

As always, there are lots of new iPhone owners, and not everyone realizes that installing new iOS updates is the surest way to lose your jailbreak and/or unlock. While those of you who have Cydia or TinyUmbrella backups of your SHSH will always be able to get back to 4.1 if you make this mistake.

However, there is no turning back at this point for ultrasn0w unlocker as the update includes modem firmware or baseband version 5.15.04 for iPhone 3G/3Gs and 3.10.01 for iPhone 4. It will be worst for iPhone 4 owners who are already stuck at baseband 2.10.4 as the unlock is delayed until further notice.

There’s currently no software method to revert your modem firmware or baseband — if you update your baseband you’ll lose the ultrasn0w unlock. However, you may want to consider using our hardware downgrade by replacing the baseband chip which contains the older version of the baseband (currently available for 3G and 3Gs only). With this method we can safely unlock baseband 5.14.02 and the new baseband 5.15.04.

If you do not have a factory-unlocked iPhone, please stay away from iOS 4.2 release until a safe jailbreak/unlock procedure (which also preserves ultrasn0w) is developed and released.

Note:

#1 There are some iPhone3G owners who can revert their basebands due to a bug in very early bootloaders (version 5.08), you can use TinyUmbrella to verify your bootloader version if you can do the downgrade via Fuzzyband.

#2 This post is published in advanced to provide ample warning to unlockers so that they won’t lose their jailbreak/unlock. The release date of iOS4.2 is still tentative at the time of posting.

  1. U NOOB. It will take a year for the new baseband witch is included in the 4.2 update to be cracked. GLHF with a locked iphone!
