OK, iOS 6 is due to be released today or tomorrow depending on where you are right now but no tech blogs specifically says the do’s and don’t for jailbreakers and unlockers. Let us share with you on our experience when there’s a new iOS update from Apple.

First and foremost, AT&T iPhones can now be officially unlocked. If you already factory unlocked your iPhone like many have, some of the following information is no longer relevant for you. However, if you rely on an unlock such as Gevey SIM, ultrasn0w or SAM, you must heed some of the warnings below.

iPhone 5
- I assume that the iPhone 5 will be pre-installed with iOS 6 when shipped, currently the jailbreak is tethered with redsn0w.
- We expect AT&T iPhone 5 can be factory unlocked, stay tuned!

iPhone 4S
- Do not update to iOS 6 or else your baseband will be updated and you won’t be able to unlock it with Gevey Ultra S, possibly for a very long time!
- If you’re already running a jailbroken iOS 5.1.1, stay that way and wait until the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 becomes available.
- If you haven’t jailbroken your iPhone, do it now!
- Current baseband that can’t be unlocked: none.
- If you have an iPhone 4S that’s blacklisted by your mobile service provider, don’t update to iOS 6 because potentially you can swap it with someone from another country and unlocking it with a Gevey Ultra S
- Latest iPhone 4S baseband version for iOS 6 expected: 3.0.04.

iPhone 4
- If you have baseband 1.59.00, 2.10.04, 3.10.01 or 4.10.01, do not update to iOS 6 or else it will be updated to a version that can’t be unlocked.
- Save your SHSH with TinyUmbrella, iFaith or on Cydia.
- Jailbreak with the latest redsn0w for untethered jailbreak.
- Current baseband that can’t be unlocked: 4.11.08 and 4.12.01. If yours cannot be factory unlocked, the only available solution is here.
- Latest baseband version for iOS 6 expected: 4.12.02.
iPhone 3GS
- If you have baseband 5.13.04 or below, do not update to iOS 6 or else it will be updated to a version that can’t be unlocked.
- Save your SHSH with TinyUmbrella, iFaith or on Cydia.
- Jailbreak with the latest redsn0w for untethered jailbreak.
- Current baseband that can’t be unlocked: 5.14.02, 5.15.04, 5.16.02 and 5.16.05 (only possible to flash it with iPad baseband 6.15.00, and then downgrade to 5.13.04 with redsn0w 0.9.14b2 IF your iPhone is not produced after week 28 of year 2011).
- Latest baseband version expected: 5.16.07.
In short, if you see the update notification in iTunes or on your Settings app on your iPhone…

Just hit Cancel and wait until proper jailbreaking or unlocking tools have been developed. Alternatively, you can try the following, tipped by @Piksou0 (recommended for advanced users only. Thanks @Piksou0!):
There is solution to prevent iPhone update to new iOS version via iTunes , the solution is to install (Cydia) tweak called “Recovery Guard ” from this source “repo.pushfix.info” , this tweak will not allow iTunes to put iPhone into recovery mode, the only solution to update firmware when you install this tweak is to put iPhone into dfu mode (no accidental update from iTunes).
It doesn’t hurt to wait. It’s gonna hurt more if you lose your untethered jailbreak or unlock!
