I have personally heard several people who bought second hand iPhones from online retailers and few days later, start complaining that their phones cannot connect to any of the first carrier. Most of them don’t know the real issue but few can testify that their days were bad. The main reason why some iPhones may fail connecting to network providers is because they are already reported as lost or stolen.

What Does it mean to have a Bad ESN/IMEI?

These are technical terms and most of the people have a hard time understanding their meaning. An ESN is an electronic serial number which is assigned uniquely to each cell phone for identification and other purposes. When an ESN is marked as bad, there are several reasons for this. Possessing an iPhone with bad ESN means that you cannot process your phone with the current carrier. The phone maybe blacklisted for several reasons which include theft, fraud, and failure to meet your dues or even loss.

If you purchase an iPhone X with a bad ESN, it means that the prior user maybe used it on Verizon and got blacklisted and hence you cannot use it on Verizon. There are several ways you can know whether your iPhone has a bad IMEI/ESN number but one of the most reliable is to send the IMEI code to T-Mobile’s website.

How do ESN/IMEI become bad?

There are several ways through which your iPhone can get a bad IMEI/ESN. If your phone is stolen and you report it as stolen to your carrier, they are likely to blacklist it to ensure it is not used in that network. If the phone is lost and you cannot trace it, you can as well go to your carrier and get it blacklisted. The screenshot below shows how a device is manually being blocked by carrier.

However, a study shows that in the US, the main reason why iPhones are have bad IMEI is if the iPhone is still active on the wireless account or if the owner has an outstanding balance on the account.

Is there a way to ensure you have a clean IMEI/ESN?

One of the ways is to make sure that the phone is completely off your wireless account before delivering it to a new user. As an owner, you should as well settle all your outstanding debts before getting it to the market.

However, if you are one of those buyers that land on iPhones with bad IMEI/ESN, you can now smile because we have got a solution for you. Although you can get the original user to clean the ESN, there is another way to make it through.

What to do if your iPhone has a bad IMEI

If you own an iPhone but don’t know what an EMEI number is or even how to get it, today am here to guide you on this. There are several ways in which you can spot the IMEI number. One of them is to check on the original box of the iPhone around the barcode. If you are not the original owner of the device and if you don’t have access to the box anymore, there is still a solution for you.

Go to the settings and then General > About and you will see the IMEI or the ESN number.

Some iPhones have these important numbers in the Simcard tray. Just pull out the simcard tray and look around.

If you cannot spot it with the above methods or if you want a simpler method, try looking at the back cover. Some iPhones have it engraved at the back cover.

The other good option is to dial *#06# on your dial pad and wait. The IMEI number will pop up.

This is not the main focus here, our main focus is to help you get out of this frustration and start using your iPhone, HTC or any other device on T-Mobiles.

What can you do when the IMEI is blacklisted?

There is a wide variety of things you can do with your blacklisted iPhone. One of them is to get in touch with the seller and ask for a refund. Although this is a very nice method of ensuring you don’t make a loss, it sucks if you cannot get into contact with your buyer. This is where we come in to help. We can get your iPhone fixed and start enjoying the better days.

The other thing is to use your phone as a toy or as a gaming console or as an iPod. There are very many ways you can use your iPhone rather than getting to make calls and send messages. If you have WI-FI connection in your house, then you are better off.

You can connect to the internet and use it for video calls and chatting online. But have you ever thought what would happen in case you wanted to experience that feeling of using an iPhone to make calls and send SMSs? This is how we help; we can get your blacklisted iPhone fixed and get what you expected within a short period of time.

The other alternative is to sell your iPhone to foreigners especially those tourists. The good thing is that even if your iPhone is blacklisted on one carrier, several other people in other parts of the world can still use it. What if you loved the phone and wanted to use it personally? We are here to give you what you want. You just need to keep in touch with us and everything else will follow.

You can as well activate the iPhone with a different carrier. Most iPhones are blacklisted on one carrier but the main issue here is that all the other carriers are free for a connection. If you find that is almost impossible to work with the current carrier, then make a move and research for another potential partner.

However, you need to flash the phone first of all to clear the settings and then take the phone to a new carrier for registration. However, this doesn’t work for lost and stolen iPhones.

In case you happen to buy a stolen or a lost iPhone by mistake and there is no other way of getting your refund back, then you can look for service providers to fix it remotely.

You first of all need to contact the carrier to determine the cause of the bad IMEI. If the reason is genuine, then they can help you fix the problem. The carrier is likely to give you specific reasons why it flagged the iPhone. If you are the original owner of the smartphone, then you will end up getting detailed information about the reasons for the bad IMEI.

How we can help?

You thought you got a great bargain on eBay or Craigslist but found out the T-Mobile iPhone you bought has bad ESN/IMEI. Continue reading on how to fix it. Many people are cheated when they purchased iPhones on the internet because the devices were sold cheaply. Little do people realize that it’s cheap because the carrier blacklisted the iPhone or in other words, it has bad ESN or IMEI.

The first thing you found out when you got your iPhone is that it’s not getting any signal from your carrier, or that probably happened a few days after your purchase.

You’re pretty sure that there’s no hardware issue but after spending hours online looking for a solution or explanation, you finally found out that it’s been blacklisted by your network provider. A few years ago, I wrote a blog post about ‘What Ever Happens to IMEI Blacklisted iPhones or Other Popular Smartphones?‘ This will help you understand more on why your iPhone got blacklisted in the first place. Although it’s a few years old, it’s still very much applicable until today.

Thankfully, your day will get better today because we actually have a service to remotely fix your iPhone or Samsung with bad ESN. Firstly, you need to go to T-Mobile’s website to determine if your device is really blacklisted.

On T-Mobile’s website, enter the 15-digit IMEI which you can find on Settings > General > About and it will return the result as blocked, lost or stolen.

If it shows Congratulations! …. instead, that means the device is not blacklisted. You’re good to use your phone.

Once you have determined and confirmed that it’s blacklisted, use our Remote Fix for T-Mobile USA iPhone with Bad ESN/IMEI service to clean it.

All we need is the same 15-digit IMEI. Do note that this service also works for Samsung, HTC or any device on T-Mobile network.

A few things to note is that the service doesn’t remove it from unpaid bills list. It will only fix if it’s reported lost, stolen or blocked.

We have cleaned close to a thousand devices for the past few months and here’s a sample of devices which have been cleaned. It has high success rate.

The process is extremely simple and no shipment is needed to get this done. Only the 15-digit IMEI is required for us to process and fix your device.

Just because the iPhone you bought has bad ESN/IMEI number doesn’t mean that it was stolen, lost or that the whole process of unlocking it is illegal. Although it is illegal to knowingly buy a stolen or a lost item, it is absolutely legal to buy it unknowingly and unlock it if need arise.

What I am trying to say is that if you bought an iPhone with a bad IMEI and you are unable to use it because of the bad ESN, don’t shut up, get up and look for a solution.
