Free iPhone Blacklist Status Checker on Verizon Website for Unlocking Eligibility

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic!

Verizon’s official website has a free iPhone ESN/IMEI/MEID checker to check if your locked Verizon iPhone can be unlocked for international use.

Some people who purchased a Verizon iPhone might be interested to get it unlocked for use with other carriers. Verizon iPhone is always tricky and historically is more difficult to unlock compared to AT&T iPhone which can be unlocked even if it’s blacklisted.

If you own a Verizon iPhone the first thing you should do is to check if Verizon has it under their blacklist database. Verizon has recently updated their website and it now includes a free checker to check your ESN/MEID status. Your device is ESN/MEID/IMEI can be found under Settings > General > About.

How to check your Verizon iPhone for free if it can be unlocked?

Firstly, simply click the link below or copy/paste it onto your favorite browser:

Then on your device go to Settings, General, About and enter 14-digit ESN/MEID/IMEI number and click Check Device.

If the result says that your iPhone is eligible for activation as shown below, that means your iPhone has a good ESN and it can be unlocked.

“Device Found. We need a little more information to add that device.”

However, if you get the message “This device has previously been reported as lost or stolen and cannot be activated at this time,” this means your iPhone is already blacklisted by Verizon or in other words, it has a “bad ESN”. A Verizon device with bad ESN is pretty much a brick. However, if you’re based in USA and would still like to use it, the ESN can be cleared so that it can be used on Verizon network again.

Bottom line, you can unlock your Verizon iPhone if the following criteria are met:

  • iPhone is eligible for activation
  • iPhone is not reported lost or missing
  • iPhone has not been activated and/or currently under someone’s account

If you are a US-based customer who has a Verizon iPhone 4S, do note that once your Verizon iPhone is unlocked it cannot be used on any GSM network in the USA. That means, the unlocking service for Verizon iPhone is only suitable for customers who are based outside of USA or for US-based customers who intend to travel around the world. This is a restriction set by Verizon and GSM carriers in USA.

I hope the free tool offered by Verizon is useful. Shop owners who often trade Verizon devices should make this free tool as part of their routine checking. Please be reminded that this tool will only work for devices registered with Verizon.
