How to Unlock Your AT&T-Locked iPhone for Free by Contacting AT&T Support

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic!

It looks like AT&T have started unlocking iPhones (via Apple) over the weekend. Need to unlock yours too? Simply follow the steps below.

UPDATE: If your request is rejected, you can still get the unlock. Click here to learn more.

1. Firstly, find out if you’re eligible for this free unlocking service.

Editor's note: learn more by reading our ebook on starting your own iPhone repair & unlock business

2.  Allocate 20-30 minutes of quiet time so that you can speak or chat properly with an AT&T’s customer support representative.

3. Once you’re ready, get your AT&T account number ready and have your iPhone in front of you.

4. Call this number 1-800-331-0500 (Sykpe user can call for free) or login to your AT&T online account to initiate a Live Chat session with an AT&T’s customer support representative.

5. They will ask a couple of questions but mainly will ask for your account information, email and your iPhone’s IMEI number. Go to Settings > General > About. Scroll down to get your iPhone’s IMEI number.

6. If there’s no issue with your account, they will issue the unlock and instructions within a few hours (some are given 24-48 hours). If this is not the case, they may have to do further checks. In this instance, they will give you a ticket number and inform you that somebody will be in touch with you within a week or by April 16th.

7. Once AT&T confirms your eligibility, they will send you the instructions as shown above. Do note that restoring your device with a stock firmware will wipe out your jailbreak.

Think of this as the officially IMEI unlocking which was offered by various vendors not too long ago. Apple is the one who does the unlocking, not AT&T.

Good luck and share your experience here! Let us know if we missed anything.

I got told via email –

    Dear XXX,

Thank you for taking the time to e-mail AT&T regarding unlocking your
iPhone. My name is YYY, and I am happy to help you with your
    inquiry.

AT&T will unlock an iPhone under the following circumstances: the person
requesting the unlock must be a current AT&T customer or a former AT&T
customer who can provide the phone number or account number on which the
device was used. Unfortunately, non-AT&T Customers are not eligible to
have their iPhone unlocked through AT&T.

The iPhone was designed for use on AT&T?s network and the following
Eligibility Requirements must also be met; all contract obligations,
including any term commitment, associated with the device to be unlocked
have been fully satisfied; the iPhone has not been reported lost or
stolen. Also, current customer accounts must be in good standing with no
past-due amount or unpaid balance and have been active for at least
sixty (60) days. Former customer account may be eligible for unlocking
so long as they owe AT&T no Early Termination Fee or other unpaid
balance. AT&T will unlock an iPhone for an active and deployed member of
the military who is a current AT&T customer in good standing and is able
to provide AT&T with deployment verification; and a person who purchased
the iPhone from an authorized location or the 'no commitment' price and
    can provide proof of purchase.

AT&T reserves the right to deny any unlock request that it concludes
would result in an abuse of this policy or is part of an effort to
defraud AT&T or its customers. AT&T further reserves the right to alter
this unlocking policy at its discretion without advance notice.

      Takes 10 minutes.

  7. got my iphone unlocked by AT&T! :) Opened a case on April 19th and got the email on May 5th! FACTORY UNLOCKED !! ;)

  8. Thanks to this post, I called customer care, and they got me unlocked with in 10 minutes.
Just an FYI for everyone, it's more efficient to call tech support, and ask about the factory unlock, then it is to do the online site chat. They make sure your phone is legit, and not stolen, and they get you going right away, the steps are simple, and it keeps your from having a laggy iphone that's jailbroken, and kills your battery.

Rep to AT&T for AMAZING customer care, and getting me unlocked safely.
If you need more information on how I did it, just email me, and i'd be more then willing to help.

Note: Most people had to wait a week, I only had to wait 10 minutes.
